The Civilian Presence
In theory families were not permitted to live in Gander during the war because the airport had now become a military base and did not provide for services to accommodate a family way of life, but some exceptions were made. Civilians to work at the airport were necessary. Not only for the construction of hangers and lodging for military personnel, there was a need to provide for other services as well. Recorded documents are provided below to relate the experiences of civilians living on a military base during this era.
